Desira Techincian Attends UK Final

2nd May 2007

Over 700 Technicians from across the country entered the competition and through a series of regional heats and exam papers, with the best twelve Technicians in the U.K attended the finals at the Automotive Trade Show at the NEC in Birmingham this week.

The live finals were held over three days, with four of the finalist attending per day to compete in four live and timed assessments (30 mins each) that were held in front of the attending public. Two assessments were conducted using an actual engine test rig (a running engine mounted in a stand) which had inbuilt faults which Jamie had to diagnose. One engine was a Ford petrol engine and the other was a Skoda diesel both products that Jamie's not familiar with but through his wealth of experience and knowledge, Jamie was able to diagnose and locate the faults. Most importantly Jamie was able to demonstrate to the judges a clear and concise diagnostic approach to finding the faults along with demonstrating his knowledge of the working components within the relevant vehicles system.

The remaining two assessments consisted of a coaching session with Jamie playing the part of coach and the judge being the apprentice. Jamie had to give a full overview of the working of a fuel injection system on a Vauxhall Astra to the apprentice, explaining the function and workings of the relevant components in the fuel injection system. The final assessment was a bench Motronic fuel injection system that had an inbuilt fault (no earth at the ECU) and Jamie had to use a multi meter and a break out box to diagnose and locate the fault, which he did successfully. It was a pressurised day for Jamie having to work under the watchful eye of both the judges and the general public but Jamie rose to the occasion and on the face of it seemed to enjoy it!!

At the end of the day Jamie was presented with his certificate by Tom Mallens Editor of "Aftermarket Magazine" for making the finals and some goodies from the events main sponsors Bosch and Vauxhall Trade Club.

Jamie now has to wait until the 11th June to find out if he's the winner or one of the top runners up but just getting to the finals was an achievement in itself. Jamie was a previous runner up in 2004 and this clearly highlights Jamie's love of all things automotive, especially when you factor in he named his son "Enzo" in honour of the famous Ferrari sports car and racing organization!!!

I am sure you will join me in congratulating Jamie on his achievement of making the final and fingers crossed he wins it!!
