The return of a Legend The Alfa Spider is synonymous with freedom, technology and pure Italian style. At its debut at the Geneva Show, the model was immediately awarded the title of "2006 Cabrio of the Year". The Alfa Spider is the prize offspring of the new Alfa Romeo generation. Italian through and through, it stems from the collaboration between Alfa Romeo Centro Stile and two names that are renown for Italian style the world over: Giugiaro and Pininfarina. The design is essential but uncomplicated - as befits a two-seater - conveying an impression of both elegance and strength: The new Alfa Spider is not just beautiful, but also technologically advanced and inherently a thoroughbred sports car. The cosseting cockpit and a wealth of avant-garde features mark the return of a legend. The feel of a sports car full of Italian character makes every journey a pleasure. The Alfa Spider proudly displays its close kinship with the Alfa Brera and at the same time revives the great tradition of Alfa Romeo convertibles. The elegant tail section is a clear allusion to the mythical Giulietta Spider of the 1950s, a genuine icon in automotive history. The result is a fascinating model, generously sized (it is 4393 mm long and 1830 mm wide), with a clean, sophisticated design. The two-seater formula and the electrically operated fabric roof are as essential and classical as they can ever be in a car of this type, conceived to offer the unique sensation of freedom and to unleash the driver’s imagination. To drive the Alfa Spider is to experience the unique sensation of pure driving pleasure. The 3.2 JTS V6 version has Alfa Romeo’s Q4 permanent four-wheel drive system as standard, a highly advanced drivetrain ensuring extraordinary dynamic control. A decisive element to be able to exploit the full power of the 260 bhp engine. At the core of the system there is a mechanical central differential (an evolved version of the Torsen C), which guarantees permanent and dynamic distribution of torque through all four wheels, allowing the vehicle to achieve maximum levels of safety and responsiveness. Under normal driving conditions the system has a rearward bias sending 57% of available torque to the rear wheels. Under varying conditions the system will then send up to 78% of available torque to the front wheels or up to 72% to the rear wheels: A solution fine-tuned by Alfa Romeo engineers to satisfy the most demanding drivers. The Alfa Spider is a car for those who long for open spaces, immense skies and the wind through their hair. For those who can savour the thrill of driving an open top car the Alfa Spider offers the most exclusive pleasure a motorist can ever ask for: mastery of the road. The credit goes to a highly sophisticated uncompromising engineering process. Steering is extremely accurate and the suspension - high wishbones at the front for maximum lateral stability providing excellent responsive handling and Multilink at the rear, for effortless maneuvering - is a jewel of cutting-edge technology. Active safety was of paramount importance on the Alfa Spider. This means road-holding, braking power and full control of the vehicle’s dynamic behaviour. These results have been achieved by adopting a number of safety devices as standard, including: ABS with EBD, VDC for stability control, ASR to prevent the wheels slipping, MSR that steps in during sudden down shifting in poor grip conditions and HILL HOLDER that facilitates uphill starting.
