START STOP TECHNOLOGY

Start&Stop is an innovative new technology currently available on Fiat 500 and 500C petrol versions and Evo and New Doblo.

This technology, born from the combined expertise of automotive parts specialist Bosch and Fiat Powertrain Technologies, has been specially developed to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The way the Start&Stop system works is simple. When the vehicle comes to a stop, the engine is automatically switched off without the driver turning the ignition key. To drive off again, the driver simply needs to press the accelerator or clutch pedal to restart the engine.

When the vehicle is at a stand still in a traffic jam or at a red light, no fuel is consumed and no CO2 is emitted. Also, noise emissions drop to zero.

Start&Stop technology is based on:

A starting system (battery and cranking motor) which is able to perform a fast engine restart and deal with a far higher number of starts than a standard system without Start&Stop.
Several sensors and control strategies which manage stop and restart operations to guarantee safety, driveability and energy balance of the car, with a minimum impact on the climatic comfort and the use of services on board.

Start&Stop is available with both Manual and Semi-automatic transmission vehicles and works as follows:

Manual transmission: when the vehicle is stationary, the engine stops if the transmission is in neutral and the clutch pedal is released.
Semi-automatic transmission: the engine stops when the car is stationary and the brake pedal is pressed. It is possible to keep the engine stopped without holding brake pedal pressed, by engaging neutral gear

CO2 emission reduction

Start&Stop technology on Fiat 500 brings the CO2 emissions down from 119g/km on a 1.2 engine to 113g/km and from 115g/km to 110 g/km on a Fiat 500 with semi-automatic transmission.
