It's Tyre Safety Month!!

1st October to 21st October 2023

As October rolls in, Desira Group PLC, is joining the nationwide effort to raise awareness about the importance of tyre safety during Tyre Safety Month. With a strong commitment to ensuring road safety, the dealership is taking this opportunity to educate motorists about the significance of proper tyre maintenance and its impact on overall roadworthiness.

Tyre Safety Month, an annual campaign held throughout October, is aimed at encouraging drivers to prioritise their vehicle's tyre health. This initiative is especially crucial as the colder months approach, and road conditions become more challenging.

1. Tread Depth Matters:

- The legal minimum tread depth in most places is typically around 1.6mm. However, for optimal safety, it's recommended to replace tyres when the tread depth reaches 3mm.

- Adequate tread depth is essential for effective water dispersion on wet roads. Insufficient tread can lead to hydroplaning, increasing the risk of accidents.

2. Tyre Pressure Affects Performance:

- Maintaining the correct tyre pressure is crucial. Underinflated tyres reduce fuel efficiency, decrease handling stability, and wear out faster.

- Overinflated tyres can lead to a harsher ride, reduced traction, and increased risk of a blowout.

3. Regular Inspections are Key:

- Tyres should be inspected regularly for signs of wear and damage. Look for cuts, bulges, or uneven wear, and address any issues promptly.

- Inspect tyres before long trips and after encountering rough road conditions or potholes.

4. Rotate Tyres for Even Wear:

- Tyres on the front and rear of your vehicle wear differently. Rotating them regularly promotes even wear and extends their lifespan.

- Consult your vehicle's manual for recommended rotation intervals.

5. Correct Alignment Matters:

- Misaligned wheels can cause uneven tyre wear and negatively impact handling and fuel efficiency.

- Regular wheel alignment checks and adjustments can prevent these issues.

6. Seasonal Tyres Enhance Safety:

- Consider using winter tyres in colder climates. They provide better traction on snow and ice, improving safety during winter months.

- All-season tyres are suitable for milder climates but may not perform as well in extreme winter conditions.

7. Check Tyre Age:

- Tyres degrade over time, even if they have sufficient tread. Many experts recommend replacing tyres that are six years old, regardless of their condition.

- You can find the manufacturing date on the sidewall of the tyre as a four-digit code, with the first two digits representing the week and the last two indicating the year.

8. Spare Tyres Need Attention Too:

- Don't forget about your spare tyre. Ensure it's in good condition and properly inflated.

- Familiarise yourself with how to change a tyre in case of a flat. Practice this skill in a safe location.

9. Load Capacity Matters:

- Overloading your vehicle can put excessive strain on your tyres, increasing the risk of a blowout.

- Refer to your vehicle's manual for the maximum load capacity and avoid exceeding it.

10. Tyre Maintenance Saves Money:

- Proper tyre care not only enhances safety but also saves you money in the long run. Well-maintained tyres have a longer lifespan and improve fuel efficiency.

By staying informed about these essential tyre safety facts and regularly maintaining your tyres, you can ensure safer journeys and reduce the risk of accidents on the road. Remember that your safety, as well as the safety of others, depends on the condition of your tyres.
